Volunteering has many benefits to both our mental and physical health. The feelings of empathy we experience when doing good chemically increase our levels of oxytocin. Commonly referred to as the “love hormone”, oxytocin produces the feeling of bonding with others. Giving of your time and yourself is a natural and enjoyable way to increase your oxytocin levels while helping others. As well, feelings of gratitude play a large part in our daily happiness and feel-good emotions.
