Palestinian Girl Turns Ashes Into Bricks to Rebuild Gaza

After almost constant turmoil and experiencing three wars in the past decade, the Gaza Strip has had many buildings destroyed, resulting in a major construction problem. Majd Al-Masharway saw how much rubble and ash was being put in landfill and came up with a radical solution. Watch how she is helping rebuild the Gaza Strip in such a sustainable way.

Pop Up Shop Helps Educate People About Abusive Relationships

This pop up shop by the nonprofit One Love was named after Yeardley Love, who was beaten to death by an ex. The shop looks like a valentine’s store or gift shop, but the items are not for sale. They are clever items that help people identify subtle signs of a potentially abusive relationship. “Girls and women age 16-24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence, and one in three women has been abused by an intimate partner. One Love is active in about 500 colleges, middle and high schools, teaching young people to look out for each other.” Watch the powerfully moving video here to learn more.

Volunteers Shovel Snow for Elderly

Jahmal Cole is a community organizer in Chatham, an largely elderly community in Southside Chicago. After a heavy snow storm came through the area, many people were worried they would be stuck in their homes. Jahmal tweeted that he needed 10 volunteers to shovel snow. “The next morning 120 people showed up, the majority of them from outside Chatham. In just a few hours, his tweet gathered more than 22,000 retweets and 64,000 likes, inspiring people to take action.” Read the whole story here.

Smart Gadgets and Robots for the Elderly

For those who didn’t grow up with computers or modern technology, it can be hard to keep up with or figure out how to make technology a part of everyday life. More and more startups have been keeping the elderly in mind with gadgets that assist them and make things easier, not more difficult. Some startups like “ElliQ and grandPad focus their apps on keeping older adults socially and mentally engaged by providing easy video calls or playing music playlists to improve one’s mood and decrease stress.” See how more and more tech companies are innovating to help elderly people avoid social isolation and other issues.
