Bioenergy Startup Converts Burgers and Fries Into Electricity

A Seattle startup is converting food scraps into electricity and fertilizer. Impact Bioenergy is different than other bioenergy operations because it is the size of a shipping-container and costs about as much as a Tesla instead of millions of dollars. They take food that would have gone to waste from local breweries and restaurants and puts it into their machine where bacteria slowly breaks down the food and converts it into a commercially valuable product. Barbie Is Teaching Girls To Code

The Mattel company that makes Barbie has partnered with a website that teaches young girls to code. They have plans to reach millions of young girls and hopefully increase the presence of women in STEM jobs. Watch this video to learn about all they are doing.

 

Hairdresser Gives Free Manicures and Haircuts To Homeless Women

One hairdresser decided to act after seeing the rates of homelessness increase by more than 50% in 3 years. He decided to put his talent to use and give back to the community by starting a project at a local women’s center that provides free haircuts and manicures to the homeless. These women live in LA’s skid row which is the largest homeless community in the US.  Watch this video to see how much of an impact this project has made on their lives.

A Vest That Could Help Reduce Anxiety and Stress

A college student created a prototype of a vest that inflates and simulates a hug. The overall function of this vest would be to reduce the stress many people feel.  Hugs have been shown to release certain neurotransmitters that reduce stress hormones. He is currently testing the prototype and getting feedback from users to make it even more effective. Watch the video here.
